Gastroenterology may be defined as the body of knowledge relating to the functions of ingestion, digestion, absorption and elimination of food. A clinical gastroenterologist in 1920 might have been defined as a man who not only looked at the X-ray reports, but also at the films ! Today many distinguished gastroenterologists occupy chairs of medicine, of surgery, of therapeutics, of pathology and of physiology.
